
Obituary of Neville Mills
Neville Hugh Mills died on Tuesday, August 8th at the Winter Haven Hospital, two days after celebrating his 76th birthday. He was a retired postal inspector.
He was born on August 6, 1947 to Bernice Perry and Edgar Mills. He grew up in the quiet farming district of Lottery in St. James, Jamaica where he attended Lottery All Age, and grew up in a rambunctious, happy household of eight children.
After leaving high school, he journeyed to Kingston where he landed a job at the Postal Corporation of Jamaica. He worked as a postman at the Central Sorting Office, the postal service's headquarters, on South Camp Road. He was employed with the institution for 33 years, rising steadily through the ranks with various supervisory roles, finally attaining the rank of a senior inspector, after which he retired.
He met his future wife-to-be, Ina Mills, in 1967 and they were married in 1975. They stayed together for 48 years until the time of his death.
He was an active member of several community-based organizations such as neighborhood watches and citizens associations, as well as service clubs in Portmore. He served as manager of the netball team at the Postal Corporation of Jamaica and netball teams in his community of Braeton Phase 3 in Portmore. He also joined numerous domino clubs where he excelled and won several trophies at tournaments in Jamaica and the USA. He was also a director at the Postal Co-operative Credit Union where he served for several years before his retirement.
He migrated to the USA in 2002 where he landed a job at the Food Bank for New York City where he worked delivering hot meals to shut-ins and older members of the Jewish community. Years later, he gained US citizenship and settled in Brooklyn, New York.
He was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2017 and had a major heart operation in 2019, recovered well and was granted four more precious years with his family before his death in the Summer of 2023.
He is survived by his wife, Ina; four children, (Sherinette, Karlene, Claude, and Nigel); two brothers, (Howard and Egbert); two sisters, (Doris and Hazel); numerous nieces and nephews and nine grand-children.
Services for Neville Hugh Mills will be held at Oak Ridge Funeral Care on August 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m with visitation one hour prior and a cremation following the service.
