Obituary of Donald J. Scannell

WINTER HAVEN - Donald J. Scannell, 81, of Winter Haven, FL passed away, Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Life Care Center of Winter Haven due to heart failure. Born in Mt. Vernon, NY he was the son of Daniel and Catherine Scannell. He was a school teacher who retired from the Mt. Vernon School System. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He is survived by: his wife Joan and her 3 children, Helen O'Leary-Byrd of Winter Haven, FL, Jeffrey Ruggieri of Mt. Vernon, NY and Robert Ruggeri of Mt. Vernon, NY; a daughter, Donna Mengel of Keller, TX; 8 grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Rita Mousley of Miami Lakes, FL and Anne M. Desmond of Athens, GA. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm till 8:00pm, Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00am, Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Cemetery of the Gate of Heaven in Mt. Pleasant, NY. In lieu of flowers the family has asked the Memorial Donations be made in his name to Cornerstone Hospice.
