Obituary of Donald Russell Egger

HAINES CITY - Donald Russell Egger, 87, of Haines City left this earth, surrounded by his loving family on June 30, 2012 due to AML. He was born August 12, 1924 to Christian and Chloe Egger "back home" in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He graduated from New Kensington High School in 1942 and immediately joined the United States Army. He was deployed to Europe during World War II, participated in the Invasion of Normandy on D-Day, and survived numerous battles throughout Europe culminating with the victorious march through Paris in 1945. He moved to Davenport, Florida in 1946 and became owner/operator of Don's Shell Service Station for 43 years under Bradford Oil Company of Winter Haven. Don and Cecile retired in 1989. He coached the championship Davenport Little League team for 4 years in the early 1960's. Don was a member of the VFW, Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary and the Haines City Order of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters and his youngest son, Russell Lee Egger, in 1978. Don is survived by Cecile, his loving wife of 65 years; sons Ronald L. Egger and wife Pam of Clearwater, FL, Robert E. Egger and wife Sherry of Waverly, GA, and Richard E. Egger and wife Lynn of Raleigh, NC; daughter Susan E. Davis and husband Bruce of Haines City, FL; 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Arrangements are being made for a military service to be held for the family at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Oak Ridge Funeral Care of Haines City is in charge of arrangements.
