Obituary of Rowena M. Schragg

Rowena Schragg, 74, of Poinciana, Florida and Union City, Michigan passed unexpectedly February 21, 2013 at her home in Poinciana, Florida. Rowena was born September 11, 1938 at the family home on Lee Street in Union City to the late Nihl L. Moore and Mildred Bryd (Swarthout) Moore. Rowena had deep roots in Union City. She was a 1957 graduate of Union City High School. Rowena married Calvin Schragg on May 11, 1958 at the Union City First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. In 2010, Calvin preceded her in death. Rowena was a member of the Congregational Church for over 60 years. Over the years, she served her church in several roles, including serving as Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, President of the Woman's Fellowship and she was a member of the Martha Circle. In 1982, Rowena had the distinct honor of serving as the President of the Union City Alumni Association has had her father after his graduation from Union City High School. In September 2001, Rowena was the co-founder, with Calvin, of Don's Citgo. She was also the co-founder of Peerless Car Wash and Calro Mint Marts. During the 70's, Rowena was the first woman ever elected to the Union City Village Council. She was one of the original board members of the BUCS recreational sports program for children located within the Burlington, Union City and Sherwood communities. She truly enjoyed coaching girl's softball. Rowena was an avid sports competitor. She particularly enjoyed golf, bowling, softball, tennis and pickle ball. The last several years she split her time between Poinciana, Florida; Madison, Mississippi and Union City, Michigan. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Schragg (Mary Jo George) of Vienna, Virginia; daughter, Jennifer Brown (Kevin Brown) of Madison, Mississippi; and three granddaughters -- Morgan Jo Brown, Chelsea Marie Brown and Cassidy Rowena Brown. She is also survived by two brothers and a sister -- Gauin Moore, Nihl L. Moore and Ruth Cannon. She was predeceased in death by her parents and four siblings -- Harold Moore, Hugh R. Moore, Richard Moore, and Lovina Kingsley. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the First Congregational Church, UCC, 410 North Broadway, Union City, Michigan 49094. Arrangements are being made by Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City, Florida; and a memorial service is being planned for June in Union City, Michigan.
