Obituary of Homer Virgil Thompson

WINTER HAVEN - Homer V. Thompson, 96, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 from natural causes. Mr. Thompson, who was born and raised in Haines City, has resided in Winter Haven, FL since 1979. He married Annette Page of Winter Haven in 1939, who predeceased him in April of 2010. They were married for 70 years. Mr. Thompson graduated from Haines City High School, and the University of Florida in 1937. He was a member of the National Guard, ROTC, and commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Field Artillery. Homer was employed by the Federal Communications Commission for 30 years, interrupted by active military service during World War II and again during the Korean War. Lt. Colonel Thompson was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service with the Army Security Agency. Since 1939 Mr. Thompson was engaged in overseeing grove properties owned by himself and Mrs. Thompson. He has been a director of the Haines City Citrus Growers Association for several terms. He is a member of Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven, American Legion, Elks, Masonic Lodge of Haines City, and the Lake Region Yacht & Country Club. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Trustees Discretionary Trust Fund of Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church, 700 North Lake Howard Drive, Winter Haven, FL 33881. Funeral Services will be held Saturday (today) May 18, 2013 at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven at 11:30 AM with interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Haines City.
