Obituary of Lem Blackwell

Lem Brunson "Pete" Blackwell (81) died at home in Lake Hamilton, FL on Saturday, November 9, 2013 of cancer. Pete is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggie Shannon Blackwell; son, Ronnie C. Blackwell (Heather Lee-Blackwell); and grandson, Ralee Blackwell along with many nieces and nephews. Pete was born to Lem and Orene on July 29, 1932 in Crenshaw County, AL near Brantley. He had two sisters, Willie Pearl Carnes, Sara Beck and two brothers, Morris Blackwell and John Blackwell. After serving in the U.S. Navy 8 years he returned to Alabama, married, and lived in both Luverne and Montgomery. In 1966 Pete and Peggie moved to Lake Hamilton where their son, Ronnie was born. Pete retired in 1994 after 20 years with the Polk County BOCC Roadway Maintenance Department. He was an active member and served on committees at Eastside Baptist Church in Haines City. He also served the community of Lake Hamilton as a volunteer firefighter, police chief, and councilman. Pete liked to garden, and was an avid fisherman during his retirement. He spent many happy times on Marco Island fishing with friends and family. His fun-loving and outgoing spirit inspires us to be good to our neighbors, treat everyone like family and always have a song in your heart. Oak Ridge Funeral Home in Haines City is in charge of arrangements. Viewing to be held Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 5 to 7 PM. Funeral will be at Oak Ridge on Wednesday at 11:00 AM.
