Obituary of Chester Sherrard

HAINES CITY - Chester "Chet" Phillip Sherrard passed away unexpectedly at Heart of Florida Hospital, in Haines City, Florida, on November 22, 2013. Chester "Chet" Sherrard was born January 3, 1927, in Charlotte, Maine to Phillip E. and Mildred A. Sherrard. He was the youngest of three children. His sisters are Agatha Morrison and Karin Gower. Chester "Chet" graduated from Calais Academy in 1944, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in February of 1945. Chester was discharged in February of 1949. He returned to Charlotte to farm with his father. In 1955 he started driving long haul trucks. In 1962 he formed Chet's Transport, Inc., and operated the family owned business until 1995. He retired to Florida in 1988. Chet worked at Florida Auto Auction for 20 years after retirement. Chester married Maxine Winters on February 8, 1948. She was the daughter of Ben and Anna Winters from Jefferson, SD. Chet and Maxine met in California when he was stationed at J H Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA. Maxine was working in Los Angeles as a Western Union operator. Chet and Maxine enjoyed traveling as members of ATA, MTA and CTA. Chet enjoyed his working membership and held official titles in all Trucking associations. Chet was an active member of Calais Lions Club and was international Director for Calais District. He was also a member of the Davenport Lions Club and enjoyed helping out in all activities. Chet never met a stranger. His children are Cheryl (Bill) Keddy of St. Stephen NB Canada, Debora DiPernia of Davenport, Lorna (Steven) Dalton of Onset, MA and Joan Sherrard of West Palm Beach. Grandchildren are Rebecca Keddy, Katie Colford Chute, Daniel Keddy, Jonathan Dipernia and Jesse Sherrard. Great Grandchildren are Zachary, Hayden and Elizabeth Chute and Jackson Sherrard Nelson. He was predeceased by his parents, son Dale Sherrard, sisters, grand daughter Kara DiPernia, and a very special friend and companion Ralph Gower. He has many nieces and nephews. Special friends are Jamie Gower and Family, Normie Mylen, Nelson Stewart, Vinnie Bass and Joe and Ray. Donations may be made to Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte, Maine 04666 in memory of Chet. Services will be in Charlotte, Maine in late spring.
